1. Savannah Visitor's Center
THE MERCER HOUSE - Home to famed antique dealer Jim Williams, the central character of the book and movie "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." Jim shot and killed his lover, Billy Hansford, in the house and was tried four times for the same charge of murder. Jim bought the house for $46,000 in 1969, restored it and ran his antique business from the house. Jim's sister inherited the house and its contents once he, and then his mother, died. The sister put the house on the market for $10 million in 1998, then took it off after rebuffing the highest bid of $4 million. She now lives in the house, located on Monterey Square. LEOPOLD'S ICE CREAM SHOP - Owned by film producer Stratton Leopold ("The Sum of All Fears," "The General's Daughter," and "Paycheck"). Originally opened in 1919 by Stratton's dad and two uncles, the shop quickly became the place to be in Savannah. All the ice cream is made from the original 1919 recipes. The walls are covered with pictures, posters, and props from films Stratton and Academy Award-nominated production designer, Dan Lamino (shop manager), worked on over the years. JACK LEIGH GALLERY - Jack photographed "The Bird Girl" statue in Bonaventure Cemetery in July 1993, and it was selected by author John Berendt to be the cover image of his book, "Midnight In The Garden Of Good & Evil." You'll also see other photographs from Jack's 35-year career as one of America's greatest photographers. CLARY'S CAFE - The Cafe celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2003, and it was author John Berendt's hangout while in town as a guest of antique dealer Jim Williams, about whom he was writing a magazine article for Esquire. This is where John met eccentric inventor Luther Driggers, creator of the flea collar, the "No Pest" strip, and sticky fly tape.
Savannah's Hollywood history began in 1915, with the filming of the silent movie "Under Southern Skies." The first talkie (movie with sound), was "A View From Pompey's Head," starring Richard Egan, filmed in Savannah in 1955. Two years later, the introductory scenes to "Three Faces of Eve" were added to the city's film history. In 1961, "Cape Fear" started production with Gregory Peck, Polly Bergen, and Robert Mitchum. And that was just the beginning! A total of 10 Academy Awards have gone to movies filmed in Savannah: "Forrest Gump" 6 Oscars, "Glory" 3 Oscars, "Three Faces Of Eve" 1 Oscar. Savannah's own Johnny Mercer won 4 Oscars over his career in the Best Song category, for "Moon River," "Days of Wine and Roses," "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening," and "On the Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe." Mercer - a co-founder of Capitol Records - garnered a total 19 Academy Award nominations in his lifetime.
